Descriptive roll for field, staff, and line officers of all infantry, cavalry, and artillery units.

Each regiment descriptive roll is comprised of four parts: (1) a listing of officers holding field, staff, or company grade giving officer name, age (often omitted), occupation, residence, birthplace, marital status, appointment or election date, muster date and place, mustering officers' names, and remarks on promotion, transfer, discharge or death; (2) a listing of commanding officers with numbers of officers and enlisted men under their command, company muster date and place, mustering officer name, principal enrollment location, regimental and camp assignments, training completion and field assignment dates; (3) type of arms issued to each company; and (4) regimental history summary (e.g, troop movements; command changes; field action) as compiled by commanding officer at war's conclusion.
